NIKE
In 1971, graphic design student Carolyn Davidson sold the Swoosh design to Phil Knight for only $35. Today, that swoosh is the logo of Nike and has created history.
In Greek mythology, Nike is the goddess of victory. The swoosh depicts the wing of the goddess combined with the brand traits which are speed, acceleration and power in a simple and innovative way.
It also resembles a check mark, which signifies a “yes” which is also a symbol of positivity and reinforcement.
Nike through the shape of its logo it conveying its attributes which are motion and speed.
1964- Nike was founded by Blue ribbon sports by university Oregon track coach and track runner Bill Bowerman and Phil Knight.
1971 – The word Nike was written in cursive serif font and was merged diagonally with the swoosh.
It is said that Phil Knight was not very fond of this logo but thought it would grow on him and decided to go with it.
1978– The cursive serif font was replaced by Futura Bold. It was more geometric in shape with the edge of “E” merging with the swoosh. The spacing between the letters was different.
1985- The Nike logo was put inside a square. By the late 1980s, Nike introduced its slogan “Just Do It.” It is said that the slogan was inspired by the phrase “let’s do it,” which were the last words uttered by death row killer Gary Gilmore before his execution.
1995- Nike adopted the lone swoosh. It stands for Nike’s attributes, athleticism, speed and quality. Today’s it is world’s most recognisable logo and stands on its own.
